Residents’ Associations (“Jumin Kyogi-kai”) and Community Centers

Community activities in Mitaka City are very lively. At the core of these activities are seven autonomous residents’ associations (“jumin kyogi-kai”). Anyone who lives in the city may join a residents’ association. The residents’ associations maintain and operate the community centers, which serve as centers for various community activities such as local information, cultural, sports, welfare, environmental and disaster prevention programs.
Community centers have meeting rooms, cultural facilities, and sports facilities such as gymnasiums and pools (excluding the Inokashira and Mitaka Ekimae community centers) that city residents can use. Each community center puts on various festivals and other events, and the centers also serve as a venue for foreign residents to visit and enjoy friendly cultural exchanges. The centers are also designated as evacuation sites during a disaster.
